1 oz Dry Vermouth

Dash of Bitters

Shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an olive and a lemon twist.

Originating at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s, the Manhattan was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted by Lady Randolph Churchill – mother of Winston – in honor of presidential candidate Samuel Tilden. Its popularity soon soared all the to, and through, Prohibition.

A less sweet version than the modern day Manhattan, this authentic Prohibition recipe uses Dry, not Sweet, Vermouth and omits the traditional cherries and orange peel for an olive and lemon.
