Ruth, suffering from cancer, was perhaps the first patient to ever receive a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. The results were published nationwide, with ruth’s participation remaining secret. Ultimately, the approach helped shape the future of cancer treatment, which according to many, was the most important contribution of his storied life.
